At HandiMapped, we believe that accessibility is a right, not a privilege. For years, students have expressed frustration with Pitt’s poor accessibility on campus. Some floors, bathrooms, and buildings are plain inaccessible to the disabled, pregnant, and individuals who experience mobility challenges. Our mission is to make the University of Pittsburgh’s campus more accessible for everyone, and we created this platform to help students, faculty, and visitors share and find accessibility information about Pitt buildings. Emergency preparedness is also a major concern, since sometimes the only way to exit a building requires a long and complicated detour. Our platform is inspired by the iconic Rate My Professor app that all college students love and use. By creating a way to rate buildings, we hope to bring awareness to accessibility issues while also helping students feel safe and comfortable on campus.
In the future, we plan to expand HandiMapped to mobile app form so students can plan their routes and rate buildings from the convenience of their cell phones. We hope that we can bring awareness to this pressing issue and ultimately gain the attention of the University of Pittsburgh and its Disability Resources & Services office to encourage real change. We would also like to expand our platform to encompass colleges around the world.
